University of Mississippi Medical Center

The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson is the health sciences campus of the University of Mississippi and the only such health sciences center in Mississippi. Established in 1955, UMMC functions as a semi-autonomous unit that is funded separately from the university. The chief executive officer of UMMC serves also as the university’s vice chancellor for health affairs.

Within UMMC’s 164-acre campus are six separate schools: medicine, dentistry, nursing, health related professions, pharmacy, and graduate studies in the health sciences. It offers programs that lead to MD, PhD, DMD, MS, and nursing degrees. Slightly more than 22 percent of UMMC’s 2,400 students are enrolled in its medical school. Residency and fellowship training programs are offered in all major medical specialties and subspecialties.

UMMC’s University Hospitals and Health System encompasses specialty hospitals and clinical practice sites across the state of Mississippi. It serves as the 722-bed diagnostic and treatment referral center for the state. UMMC is home to the only Level I trauma center in Mississippi and also has a Level III neonatal intensive care unit. Inpatient stays total about 34,000 annually with more than 455,000 outpatient and emergency visits every year.

University Hospital

The University Hospital is the flagship hospital of the UMMC campus. The emergency department is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week with board certified emergency physicians who oversee 40 emergency medicine residents. The total yearly volume of the emergency department is 104,000 visits with an admission rate of approximately 20%. The emergency department is a core part of the level one trauma center, is an accredited chest pain center, part of the joint commission stroke center accreditation and has an established early sepsis resuscitation pathway.

Conerly Critical Care Hospital

A part of the University Hospital, the 70-bed Wallace R. Conerly Critical Care hospital features specialized intensive care for medical, cardiac, surgical and neuroscience patients. Specialty services include complete cardiac care, a stroke unit, an artificial kidney unit and Mississippi’s only transplant center with heart, kidney, bone marrow and cornea services. Critical care services also include Intensiview - the only eICU program in the state. Intensiview uses an advanced monitoring system to provide a second level of attention to critical care patients, which translates to the highest level of care for acute patients.

Clinical trial management

Clinical management is provided by the Research Division of the Department of Emergency Medicine. The division is fully staffed with 8 employees to function as a clinical coordinating center, including 3 MD scientists, 1 project manager, 3 clinical coordinators, and 1 staff assistant. The division’s director is the primary investigator and thus will oversee the clinical management aspects carried out by the division.

Data trial management

Data management is provided by the Center of Biostatistics & Bioinformatics at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The Data Services core is staffed with executive director Dr. Michael Griswold; biostatistician Dr. Samantha Seals; database developer Howard Yao; and administrative assistant Tamela Goodnight. The core will support the study personnel in monitoring the collection of data, developing data collection tools and analysis of data.
